Sans Souci sits on the peninsula where Kogarah Bay and the Georges River meet Botany Bay, with Rocky Point Road running down the middle towards the Captain Cook Bridge. There are waterfront homes on the river side, family streets inland, and plenty of rebuilds and townhouses mixed in. St George Blocked Drains is a local referral service, connecting Sans Souci residents with licensed local drain plumbers we work with.
Why Sans Souci drains block
Much of Sans Souci is low and close to the water. Low ground means a shallow fall for drains, and parts of the suburb have sandy soil that finds its way into stormwater pits and pipes. Lines silt up slowly until a storm shows they cannot cope.
Waterfront properties have their own challenges. Stormwater has to make its way to an outlet, sometimes through long runs across the block, and any blockage near the outlet backs water up through the whole system. Salt air and age also take a toll on older metal fittings and grates.
The older housing stock inland, much of it built through the middle of last century, often still has clay sewer lines. Established trees in large gardens push roots into those joints. When a property is rebuilt, the new home is often connected to an old line that nobody has inspected, and that is where the next blockage starts.
What clearing a blocked drain involves
The licensed drain plumbers we work with locate the blockage, clear it with jet blasting or an eel, and use a CCTV drain camera to check the condition of the pipe. On older lines where the camera finds root damage, pipe relining can repair the section without digging up landscaping or a driveway.
Typical pricing: a standard clear runs $150 to $400. Root clearing typically costs $250 to $600. A camera inspection typically costs $249 to $600, or $350 to $900 with jetting. Relining typically costs $3,000 to $8,000 or more. Every job is quoted first.
Frequently asked questions
Our waterfront block floods near the house in heavy rain. Why?
Usually the stormwater line is partly blocked between the house and the outlet, or silted with sand. Jetting and a camera inspection show where the problem sits.
We are renovating. Should we check the drains first?
Yes. A camera inspection before the work tells you whether the existing sewer line should be relined or replaced while trades are already on site.
Who is responsible for the sewer main in our street?
Sydney Water owns the sewer mains. You are responsible for the private line from your home to the connection point. A camera with a locator shows which side the fault is on.
