Peakhurst stretches from the shops and Peakhurst Park towards the bushland around Lime Kiln Bay and the Georges River. Most of its housing went up in the postwar decades, brick and fibro homes on quarter acre style blocks, and a steady wave of knockdown rebuilds and duplexes has followed. St George Blocked Drains is a local referral service. We put Peakhurst residents in touch with licensed local drain plumbers we work with.
Why Peakhurst drains block
Postwar homes in Peakhurst were commonly sewered with clay pipe. Those lines are now old enough that joints have opened and roots have had plenty of time to find them. On the bigger blocks, backyard trees, hedges and fruit trees often sit right over the sewer line, which makes root blockages a regular call.
The duplex boom has its own drain issues. When one house becomes two, new pipework is laid and connected to the sewer, sometimes alongside or into sections of older line. Poorly graded new connections, or old pipe disturbed by excavation, can cause blockages within a year or two of the build.
Towards the river and the bush reserves, stormwater carries leaf litter and soil off the slopes. Blocked pits and silted pipes can leave yards waterlogged after a big storm.
What clearing a blocked drain involves
The licensed drain plumbers we work with typically clear the blockage, then use a CCTV drain camera to show whether roots, a sag or a damaged joint caused it. For established tree roots in drains, jetting with a root-cutting nozzle cleans the pipe back to the wall. If the footage shows a cracked section, relining or a targeted repair is quoted before any work goes ahead.
As a guide, a standard clear typically costs $150 to $400, tree root clearing $250 to $600, and a CCTV inspection $249 to $600. Combined camera and jetting runs $350 to $900, and relining typically costs $3,000 to $8,000 or more.
Frequently asked questions
Our new duplex already has a blocked drain. Is that normal?
It is not ideal. A camera inspection shows whether the cause is construction debris, a poorly graded pipe or an old line that was disturbed during the build. That footage matters if you need to raise it with the builder.
Can I plant trees near my sewer line?
It is best to keep larger trees well clear of the line. A plumber can mark the sewer route with a locator so you know where not to plant.
Is jet blasting safe for old clay pipes?
Generally yes, when the plumber matches pressure and nozzle to the pipe. A camera check flags any section too fragile to jet.
